ELECTIONS UNDER THREAT – THE ROLE OF MEDIA IN COUNTERING DISINFORMATION
The freedom of the media is a cornerstone of democratic societies, providing a vital check on power and enabling citizens to make informed decisions about their leaders. However, during election periods, the media and big tech platforms often find themselves walking a tightrope between allowing the people to exercise their freedom to voice their opinions, while simultaneously trying to stop the spread of disinformation. In the rapidly evolving landscape of technology, communication and AI, disinformation has emerged as a formidable threat to the integrity of the electoral process. Through the use of AI tools like the automative creation and dissemination of false information, algorithmically generated content is designed to mislead voters. Media manipulation erodes public trust and polarises electorates and therefore poses a serious threat to the foundations of democracy. How important is the role of media in shaping public opinion and influencing election outcomes? How is the threat of disinformation continuing to evolve during the electoral period? How can we bolster our resilience against ongoing disinformation threats?
