🇺🇸 Visa processing for applicants from 75 countries is being paused by the U.S. State Department starting January 21.
The pause is linked to stricter enforcement of the “public charge” rule, which allows visas to be refused if applicants are considered likely to rely on public benefits.
According to a department memo, consular officers are instructed to deny visas under existing law while screening and vetting procedures are reassessed. The pause will remain in place indefinitely.
Countries affected include Somalia, Russia, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Nigeria, Thailand, Yemen, Brazil, and others.

A State Department spokesperson said the goal is to prevent the entry of applicants who may depend on welfare or public benefits in the United States.
