MY NOTES⤵️👇🏽 (The notes don't have the best grammar on purpose, I wanted to keep it as raw as possible so it stays as the truest form, Tai speaks from the heart so not everything will sound perfect).
STEP 36: Using cognitive biases but not having them used against you.
Everything happens in the mind first.
The nature of life is somewhat competitive.
Don’t be so naive to think that there aren’t forces at work to take advantage of you.
Every person you encounter has one thing for sure - their best interest at heart.
You must take control; Take the reigns of life and move it forward.
Beyond you just consciously going: ‘I’m not going to be the sucker in the room’. It doesn’t mean you won’t be the sucker. - The lollapalooza effect could be at hand.
90% of your mind is in the subconscious.
Every moment in your life you’ll either be persuading or being persuaded.
The outside world is a continual game of us being persuaded to do things that are probably not in our best interest - someone else is making money.
Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett say they never go to an auction, they said: ‘You always lose at an auction’ - think of what happens to you: You walk in, there’s a person on stage (authority bias) - automatically and even subconsciously they are perceived by your subconscious as an authority = because they are literally and physically above you. Then they are doing things like: ‘Going once, going twice!’ (Scarcity bias) - They are creating scarcity and urgency, making people think: ‘ooh If I don’t buy this right now I’m gonna lose it’ - even if it’s something that you lived your whole life perfectly well without beforehand. You are also sitting in a room with a whole bunch of other people competing for the same thing (social proof bias). They show you and sell to you something that you probably want (Reward Bias), and if you miss out on the item it then creates Pain.
So then, you’ve got: Authority, Urgency and Scarcity, Social Bias/Proof, Reward bias and Pain = these all add up to create the Lollapalooza effect (this is a force too powerful - a merging of multiple biases all at once that are irresistible to the human mind, and that is why Charlie and Warren say: they don’t put themselves in that situation, it’s not something you can build up willpower around).
Irresistible forces are at work. You need to distance yourself from that effect; Get yourself out of those situations: Reduction of media consumption, reduction of news consumption, etc… things filled with many cognitive biases.
1 - Don’t get angry at the reality; just stay away from it. Avoid it as much as possible. AVOID SOURCES IN THE OUTSIDE WORLD.
2 - Strengthen your mind; you don’t completely want to just expose yourself to as much of it. You need to expose yourself enough to know you will survive it. STRENGTHEN THE MIND.
3 - Alexander the Great it, whenever you have something you fear/taking advantage of you flip it and use it to your advantage. Use the cognitive biases for your own good use, to persuade people. USE THE 25 BIASES YOURSELF.
4 - Realise how competitive life is. Understand that there are false beliefs, and come to understand the real truths. UNDERSTAND.
The reason it is easier for you to be made a sucker isn’t from a place of evil. The competition has its own agenda (every organism is made to do things for its own best interest)
You don’t have to be the sucker or take advantage of other people; you can pull it all together into a worldview and understanding where everybody wins.
