This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.

This video focuses on Aristotle's work, the Nicomachean Ethics, and focuses upon his discussion of a feeling or emotion (pathos) that is not itself a virtue, but does have a mean or middle position, in book 4. This morally relevant emotion is that of SHAME (aidos), and Aristotle tells us why the virtuous person will feel shame only "by hypothesis", and how this differs from the shameless person. He also discusses why shame is appropriate for younger people, but not for older people.
