Today we're taking the fantastic new freeware Grumman J2F Duck by flyndrive up for some low level fun around Fantasy of Flight (another awesome freeware). The aircraft is a full native conversion of Paul Domingue's FSX Duck, including many modifications and updates, like improved modelling, flight model and sounds. And as if one freeware Duck wouldn't be enough, the package actually includes the J2F4, J2F5 and as seen here the J2F6.
The liveries included in the package were done by Jankees and include some of the remaining airworthy Ducks, like Kermit Weeks' one that I used for this video. Kermit's Duck is an older restoration and has a white interior, which actually gets depicted in the sim, all other Ducks come with an authentic black and zinc chromate green cockpit.
In my opinion the Duck is one of the best freeware aircraft I have tested in MSFS. The visual model looks great, both on the in- and outside, as do the liveries, the sounds for the most part are awesome too, and the real star is probably the flight model. It flies like you would expect looking at the Duck, during turns it needs a lot of rudder to keep it halfway coordinated and it tends to weather-vane quite a bit. As it sits very tall, has a lot of side surface area, is a biplane and has a narrow landing gear it can become quite tricky during takeoff and landing, especially with a crosswind, as I was able to demonstrate on my first landing...of course totally on purpose...cough cough. The water handling also feels a lot better than in most other amphibians I've tried in the sim so far.
Really the only thing, in my opinion, that could be improved are the flyby sounds, but as a flyby view isn't really a feature in the sim and it is something that could be improved in 90% of payware aircraft that is a very small issue and doesn't bother me too much. One other thing is, that on the J2F4 parts of the engine seem to be sticking through the cowling.
Overall, the Duck is fantastic and I'm super happy to have this unusual and rare aircraft in the sim. I especially like that the flight model feels totally unique to the aircraft. If you're a fan of vintage aircraft / warbirds, I can't recommend the Duck high enough!
For this flight I took the Duck around rotornut44's amazing Fantasy of Flight scenery, home of the world’s greatest collection of vintage aircraft, including this particular Grumman Duck, N1214N.
I hope you’ll enjoy the video. Thanks for watching!
