This was the maiden voyage of my canoe, and I didn’t expect it to happen in the middle of winter. With Monte Lake still holding open water in early January, I took the opportunity to get out for a quiet, cold-weather paddle and see what winter canoeing really feels like.
This trip wasn’t about distance or speed — just getting on the water, learning the canoe, and enjoying the stillness that winter brings. Sometimes the season doesn’t matter. If the water’s open, it’s time to paddle.
