Back in the Days of the Trolley Line....
Life on this historic island moved mere slowly. There were farms on the island and most everybody had chickens and a cow. Travel to and from the island was by ferry boat, then you boarded the trolly car which rocked and rattled its way up Middle Street. Fort Moultrie was an active army installation.
Only a few year-round residents lived on the island and everyone, absolutely everyone, knew each other by first name.
"We lived in a very neighborly neighborhood. Everybody had vegetable gardens and, therefore, everybody had vegetables...if someone caught fish, we all had fish."
This 1-hour production brings back the island as it was in earlier days. Compiled from video interviews with twenty-eight long-time island residents, their recollections evoke images of a time gone by, when money was tight but life was somehow easier. When one-room groceries dotted the island and big news was when someone caught a really big fish.
"Everybody here was just one community. Back then you only had a few families that stayed here in the wintertime. Come Labor Day, everybody except maybe fifteen or twenty families went back to Charleston."
This is history which is both entertaining and informative, told by those who lived it. You'll thoroughly enjoy this exceptional look back into the earlier days of this unique and beautiful barer island community.
A must-see for anyone who loves Sullivan's Island and admires lowcountry history.
