We had read quite a lot about Waikouaiti. We decided to stay for a while and spend some time exploring the surrounding area.
Waikouaiti is a small settlement located in East Otago. It is surprisingly close to Dunedin and is within the city limits, approximately a 35-minute drive north and right on the coast.
Waikouaiti has a rich and colourful history. It was the site of the first European settlement in southern NZ. The main activity back in 1837 was farming and also the site of a couple of whaling stations.
We went on a roadie to explore a little of the surrounding areas including the historic farm buildings at Matanaka, Karitane, Puketeraki, Purakaunui, Long Beach and Osbourne (just to name a few).
