It's time to go back to the Amiga once again to play one of the all time greatest hidden gems, Enemy Tempest of Violence! Possibly the greatest Amiga game, it at first resembles a space themed cinematic platformer, but it plays pretty differently from Prince of Persia type games. The controls are idiosyncratic and take a bit of getting used to, but when you do, they feel surprisingly great.
The storyline of this game is awesome. It starts with an amazing intro with incredible music, and concerns scientists and military personnel that are investigating a derelict spaceship, and end up getting trapped on three alien ships. There is an ensemble cast with multiple characters, and each mission you're playing a different character. As the plot moves on, various things happen and various characters die; it's really quite a surprisingly cool and in-depth plotline which gets more and more exciting. The game's mission based structure works well for this kind of game.
This game is also complimented by an absolutely incredible soundtrack, which does a great job of adding a ton of excitement to many missions.
This is an action puzzle game with an emphasis on puzzles. Each stage has a timer and checkpoints, but checkpoints do not reset the timer, so each stage needs to be learned carefully and then executed within the time limit. This ends up being very satisfying as you learn to put together each stage. There's also a lot of really smart puzzles, and this game uses the most clever hint system I've ever seen in a game. Unfortunately if you play this game on emulator without having read the manual, you may never even know this help system exists; you're supposed to use the help key, which can be binded to different keys in emulator or possibly not at all. Make sure you locate this key and make use of it. What the hint system does is bring up a number of tiles that look like mahjong tiles, with each picture indicating in a vague way what you have to do. For example, a hand tile means you need to use an object, a shoe means the puzzle requires you to go to other rooms first, a joystick means agility is required and an eye means look around carefully. Sometimes multiple of these tiles are used to place emphasis, so for example, if three eye tiles are used, it's something hidden cleverly and you need to really look at the screen you're on! It's a brilliant hint system which IMO is a cornerstone of what makes this game's puzzles so good, so absolutely make sure you figure out what the help key is before you play this!
This game in it's original version is quite difficult because of some strict puzzles and timers. The original developers later released an "easyplay" patch. If you find this game's difficulty intimidating, you may wish to try out this version, though personally I think the tight difficulty of the original is the most satisfying way to play through it.
I think this is the best cinematic platformer ever made, and also probably the best Amiga game. You could even say it's just one of the best adventure computer games. It may take a bit of effort to get into, but it's really worth it! Absolutely incredible game!
