Nachtgesang is related in spirit to my orchestral work Spiralgesang (1987/88). Both works are based on a modal melody. Whereas the melody in Spiralgesang is played by the clarinet from the beginning of the musical development, the process is the reverse in Nachtgesang. The expansive melodic development, which rises to two high points, reflects the origins of the melody; it at first rises from the darkness of night in a fragmentary manner, only to sink anew; it takes shape again in new colors and forms, finally flowing into the peaceful song of the clarinet.
Nachtgesang arose as a result of my occupation with Gregorian chant and is dedicated to Christian Schmid, who opened the doors to this wonderful world of chant for me.
