8 LEVELS OF REPENDENCE [9:80]
“I once met a brother who did 10,000 istighfārs every day! You might think that’s amazing — but pause for a moment… how many of those had any presence?”
Let’s make it real. If someone wronged you, would you prefer 1,000 empty sorries… or just 1 that was meaningful?
Allah ﷻdeclares in the Qur’an:
"˹It does not matter˺ whether you ˹O Prophet˺ pray for them to be forgiven or not. Even if you pray for their forgiveness seventy times, Allah will never forgive them. That is because they have lost faith in Allah and His Messenger. And Allah does not guide the rebellious people." (Qur’an 9:80)
Imagine the Prophet ﷺ asking for forgiveness for you over seventy times — and it still isn’t accepted! Why? Because they were in denial, covering up their actions.
Seeking forgiveness requires presence. And while Allah’s ﷻ generosity may reward our mere utterance, we are far more effective doing fewer… but with true presence.
Here are 8 levels of istighfār you can work towards:
Saying sorry — obliviously, without consciousness. Just repeating the words.
Saying sorry — with presence, but not the deed. A general sorry, not linked to the actual fault.
Saying sorry — with presence and recollection, but no remorse. Like a child just trying to escape punishment.
Saying sorry — with meaning and regret. Now we begin the genuine apologies.
Saying sorry — by recognising and acknowledging how the other person must feel.
Saying sorry — by recalling the action and contemplating every aspect of what you did.
Saying sorry — by vowing never to repeat it, with meaningful steps to back it up.
Saying sorry — by making it right and compensating for what you did.
True forgiveness begins in the heart and emerges in our deeds — not just in the utterance of our tongue.
Let every istighfār be a step of sincerity and transformation. One that heals… not just counts.
