Chômeur is a classic French-Canadian dessert from Quebec! Filled with delicious maple syrup, this is one sweet treat!
RECIPE:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (to bake Pouding Chômeur). Remove butter from fridge to come up to room temperature. Grease a 9X13 baking dish with 1/2 tsp oil while you wait for your oven to come up to temperature!
MAKE MAPLE SAUCE
In a small pot, whisk together the brown sugar, boiling water, maple syrup and 2 tbsp butter. Bring to a gentle boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce heat to medium-low. Cook, stirring often, until slightly reduced, 8-10 min. Remove from heat and let cool for 5-7 min.
START CAKE BATTER
In a large bowl, cream together ¼ cup butter and the granulated sugar, until mixture is light yellow, 1-2 min. Add the egg and milk. Cream together until the butter-sugar mixture is smooth.
FINISH CAKE BATTER
Add the flour, baking soda and salt to the large bowl with the butter mixture. Stir, scraping down any flour on the sides of the bowl, until all the dry ingredients are fully combined.
ASSEMBLE POUDING
Pour the cake mixture into the greased baking dish. Spread with a spatula into an even layer. Carefully pour the maple sauce on top.
Place the baking dish onto a baking sheet. Bake in the centre of the oven for 30 mins, or until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean. Let cool 15 minutes before serving.
