Released in 1930, Winter is a Silly Symphony directed by Burt Gillett, with music arranged by Bert Lewis. The short is the fourth and final entry in Disney’s seasonal quadrilogy, following Springtime, Summer, and Autumn—bringing the cycle to a snowy conclusion.
Set in a forest blanketed by winter, the cartoon follows woodland animals as they emerge from their shelters to enjoy the season. Ice skating, snow play, and communal festivities unfold before the group gathers around a groundhog to determine whether it’s time to stay awake or retreat back into hibernation. As with the other seasonal Silly Symphonies, the emphasis is on atmosphere, rhythm, and movement rather than narrative.
The musical score draws from a mix of seasonal and classical selections, including James Pierpont’s Jingle Bells, Émile Waldteufel’s The Skaters’ Waltz, Arthur de Lulli’s The Chop Waltz, and Hans Engelmann’s Dance of the Goblins, all synchronized to the animals’ winter antics.
Winter premiered in New York on October 10, 1930, where it played alongside RKO’s Half Shot at Sunrise. With its release, Disney completed the studio’s first full seasonal cycle—an early experiment in thematic unity that helped define the Silly Symphony series.
Now in the public domain, Winter stands as a fitting capstone to the quadrilogy, celebrating the beauty and playfulness of the coldest season through music-driven animation.
