Gavi is a pristine eco-tourism destination located in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala, tucked deep within the Ranni Reserve Forest and forming a vital part of the Periyar Tiger Reserve. Known for its "untouched" wilderness, it is one of the few places in India where conservation is prioritized over commercial development.
Landscape and Unique Features
Biodiversity: The forest is home to more than 260 species of birds, including the Great Pied Hornbill and Woodpeckers. It serves as a sanctuary for endangered wildlife such as the Nilgiri Tahr and Lion-tailed Macaque, along with elephants, tigers, and Indian bison (gaur).
The Gopher Trees: Gavi is famous for being one of the few places in India where you can find the rare Gopher trees (locally known as Nirampalli), which are mentioned in Biblical texts.
Flora: The terrain is varied, featuring evergreen forests, sprawling grasslands, and aromatic cardamom and coffee plantations that resemble "rolling carpets" across the land.
Popular Activities
Canoeing & Boating: Visitors can glide across the emerald waters of Gavi Lake or Kochupamba Reservoir, often spotting wildlife along the shorelines.
Jungle Safaris: Regulated jeep safaris take travelers through 50–100 km of deep forest stretches, passing through reservoirs like Moozhiyar and Kakki.
Trekking: Guided trails lead to the Sabarimala Viewpoint, offering panoramic views of the Western Ghats and the sacred Sabarimala hills.
Night Safaris & Camping: For a more immersive experience, there are options for overnight forest stays in tree-top houses or portable tents at designated sites like Kullur and Pachakanam.
Access Permits: Entry is strictly regulated. You must pre-book an entry pass through the Official Gavi-Kakki Online Portal.
Travel Alert: For 2026, the Angamoozhi–Kochandi check post is closed from January 12 to 15 due to security for the Sabarimala Makaravilakku festival.
Best Time to Visit: The winter months from October to March offer the best weather for trekking and wildlife sightings. The monsoon season (June–September) is exceptionally lush but may lead to trail closures for safety.
Prohibitions: Gavi is a plastic-free zone; single-use plastics are strictly prohibited to protect the ecosystem.
