FSQ is a New York outfit headed up by Chuck Fishman and includes Grammy nominated GKoop, Chas Bronz and One Era. They formed under the auspices of George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic and made their debut in 2014 on Soul Clap Records. Dolette McDonald is a pretty famous hired gun. She’s performed with Chic, The Rolling Stones, Steve Winwood, Tears for Fears, Michael Zager Band, Blancmange, and Cabaret Voltaire. She’s been credited on 100s of records during her remarkable career. Together they bring us a new version of this classic.

Talking Heads track “I Zimbra” is not a new tune to Dolette. She’s sung it countless times as part of Talking Heads back in the 80s. “I Zimbra” was the lead track from Talking Heads 1979 album, “Fear of Music”. FSQ’s version of ‘I Zimbra’, takes the original and puts a spin on it, leaving some breathing room for new percussion patterns and a revision of the plucky guitar accents that are a bit more hidden in the original. You will also hear shiny new synth arpeggios sprinkled through the track. Dolette replaces original vocalist David Byrne with her crystal clear and soulful vocals. Such a deep and faithful vocal delivery is no easy feat considering the original lyrics to “I Zimbra” are non-sensical words totally made up out of thin air, derived from a poem by avantgarde poet Hugo Ball.



On Soul Clap’s version, their club rhythms take it tribal, adding an urban dynamic to a song that was originally much more of a funk workout.
