In almost every painting by Hieronymus Bosch you will find an owl. Sometimes he hid them, and at other times he painted them as central figures in the scene. The owl is one of the most enigmatic animals that exist, and the fact that it appears so consistently in his work carries a broad and complex symbolism.
To understand why Bosch painted owls in his works, it is important to look at the meaning this animal had in the Middle Ages, how it was viewed within Christianity, and of course what people five hundred years ago understood when they saw a creature like this in a painting.
