STORYLINE:

Thousands of Israeli policemen were deployed in Jerusalem on Friday amidst fears that violent clashes will follow the Muslim prayers at Temple Mount.

The security forces were on the streets of East Jerusalem and at the entrances and exits of the Temple Mount compound.

The compound is one of the most sensitive sites in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Home to the Al Aqsa and Dome of the Rock mosques, it is revered by Muslims as the spot where tradition says Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven.

Jews refer to it as the Temple Mount, site of their biblical temples.

The Western Wall, Judaism''s holiest site, is an outer wall of the compound.

Last week, Israeli police stormed the compound to disperse Palestinian stone throwers, firing stun grenades, tear gas and rubber bullets.

It was the most serious clash since September 2000 when then-opposition leader Ariel Sharon - now Israeli Prime Minister - visited the site, sparking deadly riots that escalated into the current round of fighting.
