This leg of the journey takes us down the West Coast, moving through Ross, then Franz Josef, and on to Fox Glacier. Along the way we stop to take it all in — first Franz Josef Glacier, then Fox Glacier — two giants sitting quietly in the valley, reminders of how alive this landscape really is.
That same day, we begin the Welcome Flat Hut Track, also known as the Copland Track, starting just beyond Fox Glacier township. We set off around midday, not rushed, just moving with the day.
The walk stretches on longer than expected. As the light fades, the bush closes in and the track becomes more about persistence than pace. By the time we’re nearing Welcome Flat Hut it’s fully dark — head torches on, senses sharpened, trusting the trail and each other.
We arrive sometime between 7 and 8pm, tired but buzzing. It’s all part of the journey — long days, changing light, moments of doubt, and that quiet satisfaction that comes from walking your way into a place rather than just arriving.
This isn’t about ticking locations off a list. It’s about moving through them, feeling the distance, and letting the land set the rhythm.
