Описание: The podcast outlines the various stages and rituals associated with Tamang birth rites and naming ceremonies (Janma Sanskar), drawing from the "Tamang Rites and Culture Guidebook" published by the International Tamang Council [Source title: तामाङ संस्कार संस्कृति निर्देशिका].
The key phases described are the Protection of the Fetus (Garbhako Rakshya), Birth (Janma), and the Naming Ceremony (Nwaran/Thaapsaang).
1. Protection of the Fetus (Garbhako Rakshya)
To ensure well-being (mangala) for the expectant mother and the unborn child, the Buddhist Dobhang Paritran Sutra is recited periodically at home. Additionally, Sangsergem is performed for the clan deities (Kul Devata) specific to the lineage, seeking happiness, health, and peace for the family.
Precautions and Conduct:
• The pregnant woman must avoid dangerous scenes, frightening sights, and activities that pose physical or mental risk.
• Both husband and wife must refrain from killing any living creature (prani hatya) during the pregnancy.
• Significantly, pregnant women in Tamang society are not prohibited from participating in any auspicious or inauspicious rituals (karma-kandas).
• For protection, worship (puja) is offered to Lhokaav and Simebhume (Shivdaah:neda).
• If the woman has previously miscarried, a Risapa or Moch ritual is performed by a Bombo (Shaman) or Lama.
• The expectant mother is encouraged to read good books and visit nearby monasteries (gumbas).
• She should consume nutritious food and regularly consult experienced elderly women, traditional birth attendants (Sudheni), female health workers, or local health posts for check-ups and delivery preparation.
2. Birth (Janma)
Following the birth, the new mother is washed, cleaned, and immediately provided with strengthening and nutritious food (taagatilo).
Rituals and Care:
• For the protection of the mother and child, a Lama recites Buddhist texts including Chhedup, Domang path, Mangal Sutra, and Darjyu Sutra, adhering to Mahayana Buddhist tradition.
• Laabtawa and Bombo also perform puja based on the family’s clan religion (Kuldharma).
• The umbilical cord (naal) is cut and tied using a clean, non-rusty instrument, with assistance from an experienced woman or health worker.
• After cleaning the baby with clean water, the child is warmed (sektap), cleaned with pure paati (a type of leaf), and then fed mother’s milk.
• The umbilical cord and the placenta (shaal) are wrapped in a leaf container (tapari) or leaves and buried in a safe location.
3. Naming Ceremony (Nwaran / Thaapsaad)
The naming ceremony involves bringing a Lama, Bombo, Bhikshu (monk), or Laaptawa, depending on the local customs.
Timing and Naming:
• The ceremony is typically held on the 3rd, 5th, 7th, or 11th day for both sons and daughters, though circumstances may alter the timing, and the domase period is not observed.
• Names are given in the Tamang language (examples provided include Poti, Reppa, Lachhirind, etc.).
• The selection of the name is based on Jyotishastra (Chi), ensuring compatibility with the planet (graha), constellation (nakshatra), day, Lho, Khaam, and Mewa.
Ritual Process:
• To invite the priest (Lama or Bombo), Pong or Khada (traditional scarves/offerings) are sent.
• Lamas recite sacred texts such as Sangbumba Chhyoi, Dorje Naamjyud, and Tasi Chopge.
• If a Lama is unavailable, a Manchhad nwaran is performed, and the naming may be carried out by a Gaamba, Taamba, nephew, son-in-law, or maternal uncle.
• The ceremony utilizes Sangwumba and sacred water (Thui).
• The baby is dried using the steam generated by placing Thaapsang Gresing, titepaati (mugwort), and darshandunga on hot coals.
• Following purification rituals, the mother and baby receive a blessing (Shiilthaap) using Thui from the Kalash (vessel).
• The Thui from the Bumba is also given to the traditional birth attendant (Sudheni) and all invited guests.
• The ceremony is performed even for children born from inter-caste marriages provided the parents were married according to Tamang rites.
• The choice of who performs the naming (Lama, Bombo, etc.) is determined by the parents' wishes.
4. Naming Ceremony by a Jhakri/Shaman (Jhãkridwara Garine Nwaran)
In this specific method, sacred water (Thui) is purified within a Bumba/Kalash by adding substances such as cloves (lwaang), cardamom, sandalwood, panchaaule, mugwort, dubo grass, and metal. This Thui and fruit (Chho) are then sprinkled on, or given to, the family and guests for purification.
