Psalm 51 in Latin - one of the most powerful prayers of repentance ever written. This Gregorian chant features the complete "Miserere Mei Deus" (Have mercy on me, O God), the psalm David wrote after his greatest failure.
If you're carrying something heavy, seeking forgiveness, or just need to reset your heart before God, this ancient prayer has been doing that work for thousands of years.
We've set the traditional Vulgate Latin text to authentic Gregorian chant melody - the same way this penitential psalm has been sung in monasteries during Lent and times of confession since the Middle Ages.
The Latin phrase "Cor mundum crea in me Deus" (Create in me a clean heart, O God) is one of the most haunting lines in all of Scripture, and hearing it chanted brings a weight you don't get from just reading it.
A lot of people use this during Lent, Ash Wednesday, or personal confession times. Some play it during their morning prayer when they need to start fresh. Others put it on repeat when they're working through guilt or shame and need to be reminded that God's mercy is bigger than their mistakes. There's no wrong way to pray this one.
PSALM 51:1-2, 10-12
"Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin... Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me."
Latin Lyrics (Full Vulgate):
Miserere mei Deus secundum magnam misericordiam tuam. Et secundum multitudinem miserationum tuarum dele iniquitatem meam.
Amplius lava me ab iniquitate mea et a peccato meo munda me. Quoniam iniquitatem meam ego cognosco et peccatum meum contra me est semper.
Tibi soli peccavi et malum coram te feci. Ecce enim in iniquitatibus conceptus sum et in peccatis concepit me mater mea. Ecce enim veritatem dilexisti.
Asperges me hysopo et mundabor lavabis me et super nivem dealbabor. Auditui meo dabis gaudium et laetitiam. Averte faciem tuam a peccatis meis et omnes iniquitates meas dele.
Cor mundum crea in me Deus et spiritum rectum innova in visceribus meis. Ne proicias me a facie tua et spiritum sanctum tuum ne auferas a me. Redde mihi laetitiam salutaris tui et spiritu promptissimo confirma me.
