The series on Margins highlights how the most meaningful parts of life, relationships, spiritual connection, and emotional peace, happen in the space between our limits and our capacity. Today’s focus is on Financial Margin: having money left after needs are met and generosity is practiced. Without financial margin, life becomes stressful, hurried, and spiritually disconnected.
Point 1 — We Are All Living on a Percentage of Our Income
Larry: Everyone lives on some portion of what they earn, ranging from 80% to 100%, or even more than they make. The problem isn’t usually how much we earn but the lifestyle we choose to chase.
We tend to believe that just a little more income will solve our anxiety, but the truth is that “enough” keeps changing as we compare ourselves to others and expand our wants.
Troy: Scripture teaches us to live with daily bread trust, not accumulation. Financial margin is an act of faith that says, I already have enough because God is enough.
Point 2 — Lack of Financial Margin Leads to Tension and Stress
Larry: When our lifestyle rises to match (or exceed) our income, we live with pressure and fear:
If income drops, a crisis
If bills spike, a crisis
If work slows, a crisis
This is not a money problem—it’s a margin problem.
To restore margin, we need:
A balanced plan for spending
Emergency reserves
Slower lifestyle expectations
Troy: Financial tension is spiritual tension. When our values grow faster than our gratitude, peace shrinks. Margin is where trust in God breathes again.
Point 3 — Our Lifestyle Often Eliminates Margin
Larry: Culture constantly pushes us to consume: “You deserve it. Upgrade. Get more.” This mindset trains the heart to believe joy comes from having more rather than needing less.
When we spend everything on ourselves, we remove the space where generosity and God’s presence could shape us.
God invites us not to guilt, but to freedom through simplicity.
Troy: The spiritual solution: Put God first.
Not after we have margin, but to create margin.
By giving first—however small—we break the power of money and open our hearts to peace, gratitude, and generosity.
Percentage-priority giving restores margin by placing worship ahead of consumption.
Conclusion
God wants to lead us to a financial life marked by:
Peace instead of pressure
Gratitude instead of grasping
Generosity instead of self-consumption
Margin frees our marriages, families, faith, and emotional lives.
The invitation is simple and immediate:
Put God first — in time and in finances — and rediscover the space where God restores peace.
