The U-S Republican presidential candidates traded barbs over social issues and taxes Thursday in South Carolina.

Their encounter underscored the fact that the campaign had moved into the conservative South.

The candidates said the all-male Citadel of Columbia should be allowed to bar women. And conservative Pat Buchanan said the Confederate flag was a symbol of defiance and courage, not racism.

The Republican campaign for the nomination to fight President Bill Clinton has moved to the Conservative south of America.

In a televised debate Dole came under fire using negative ads to attack arch rival Pat Buchanan.

But he successfully fought off the accusation and not without a little wit.

SOUNDBITE:
I took it out of his columns, maybe they're not accurate, I always thought they were. But if their not accurate that's all right with me. But Pat and I are friends, I mean he said it. I don't go round making these things up, I'm a busy man. I've got things to do trying to save America.

Then Buchanan launched into Dole, accusing him of being an economic liberal who cost the U-S billions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of jobs.

SOUNDBITE:
We've got a 15 billion dollar trade deficit with Mexico, 300-thousand lost American jobs, many of them from South Carolina. Every member of the Republican delegation from south Carolina to Congress opposed NAFTA wisely. It was great of them do so. illegal immigration is up, narcotics are coming in and Senator Dole and his friend Bill Clinton put together a 50 billion dollar bail out of that corrupt government in Mexico. 300-thousand lost jobs, 50 billion dollar bail out in two years. If NAFTA is a success, I would hate to see a failure

Buchanan is by far the most right wing of the Republican presidential nominees, a title he seems to relish if his rhetoric is anything to go by.

SOUNDBITE:
I believe in free and fair trade with free and fair traders like Germany, England, Europe, but I do not believe in being a wimp when you've got a country like China that puts a 40 percent tariff on American goods. You have got to be tough if you are going to break open foreign markets to American goods. Get rid of these monstrous trade deficits.

On the Cuba incident all the candidates vowed to get tough on Castro.

SOUNDBITE:
The Dole-Helms-Burton will pass Congress sometime next week. This will permit us to tighten sanctions on Castro, which we should have been doing. This administration has had a failed policy for three years........

The closely fought debate was a sign of the stakes in the days ahead. South Carolina Republicans vote Saturday, followed by primary voting in eight more states on Tuesday.
