Located in the county of Cornwall, and around 20 miles southwest of Newquay, is the town of Camborne.
The town's name derives from Cornish 'Kammbronn', meaning 'crooked hill'. At its heart is the Parish Church of St Martin and St Meriadoc. This dates largely from the late 15th century and early 16th century, with some 19th century restoration. The church is Grade I listed.
Camborne has a history of mining, dating back to the 15th century or earlier. It wasn't until the late 18th century, however, that tin and copper mining activity in the area, sparked by the Industrial Revolution, transformed the settlement from a small village into a prosperous town. Its peak was reached around the mid-19th century, when Camborne had become a world leader in copper and tin mining. However, due to global competition, mining activity began to decline by the late 19th century, and ultimately ceased altogether in 1998 with the closure of South Crofty Mine in 1998.
In 1801 local engineer Richard Trevithick tested his steam-powered road locomotive, the 'Puffing Devil' in Camborne. This was the world's first self-propelled passenger-carrying vehicle, predating George Stephenson's Locomotion No. 1 by over 20 years. However, it was the latter which ultimately caught on, possibly due to the limitations in practicality for road-based locomotives.
In 1843 the railway arrived in Camborne. Initially, this was a short line connecting to local destinations such as Hayle and Redruth. However, the opening of Brunel's Royal Albert Bridge in 1859 led to the line being extended east of Cornwall. The station of today is situated on the Cornish Main Line which runs between Penzance and Plymouth.
