Ketogenic diets have exploded into popularity over the past few decades. While their big focus today is weight loss, the keto diet started as a cure for epilepsy in the 1920s and 1930s. Even though this diet has been around for a century, the idea behind the keto diet still remains primarily the same; reduce carbohydrate intake and increase fat and protein.
When deprived of its primary energy source (carbs), your body enters a state of ketosis. Here it breaks into its fat and protein reserve for energy. When broken down, the fat produces ketones, which is why this diet is called the ketogenic diet. If maintained, over time you lose weight!
Is this diet good for you? Well... the answer is different from person to person. For some, the elimination of carbs, can reduce blood sugar levels and assist with diseases like diabetes. For others, extended ketosis can result in acidosis or kidney problems. It's very important to consult a medical professional before pursuing any diet or exercise regimen.
