Handheld gaming used to be a lot different than it is today. It was its own category designed for a different type of gameplay.
Smaller games. Smaller devices. Real portability.
But over the years the games and the consoles have just gotten larger, from the Game Boy Advance and DS era to the Switch, Steam Deck, and modern handheld PCs.
This isn’t a retro vs modern debate - handheld PCs are incredible, emulators are better than ever. But somewhere along the way, the lines blurred between portable gaming and full console gaming on a smaller screen.
