In this lecture, we will be discussing the Liquation
Highlights:
Metals which have a lower melting point than the impurities are refined by this method
The furnace used is slope hearth furnace
It is the modified reverberatory furnace in which inclined hearth is made
The impure metal is placed on the sloping hearth of the furnace and heated gently
The melting point of lead is less than the melting point of zinc
Lead melts and flows down and impurities are left on the hearth
These impurities are called dross
Metals like tin (Sn), lead (Pb), bismuth (Bi), mercury (Hg), etc. are purified by this method
