The situation on the Korean peninsula appears to have heated up slightly after North Korea, the United States and South Korea showed off their military might. The North also test-fired missiles from its new destroyer, a day after the South and the United States began joint exercises.

North Korea’s state news agency KCNA reported that supreme leader Kim Jong-un inspected the launch of strategic missiles from the destroyer Choe Hyun on March 10, a day after the US and South Korea held annual drills. Pyongyang has often criticized the joint drills as preparations for aggression, even though the two allies see them as strengthening their defense capabilities.

North Korean media quoted Kim as saying that the missile launch this time was important for ensuring and expanding the DPRK’s nuclear power. The North Korean leader said that the components of the DPRK’s war-fighting system were being integrated into a modern and efficient operational system, and that the DPRK’s nuclear force had entered a stage of multi-pronged operation.

Kim also expressed satisfaction with the test, which verified the reliability of the joint control system of strategic weapons and the superiority of the destroyer’s combined combat system.

According to KCNA, the North Korean leader instructed to inspect the effectiveness of the automatic guns installed on the Choe Hyun and study the possibility of replacing them with hypersonic weapons systems on the 5,000-ton and 8,000-ton destroyers to be built in the future.

Last April, North Korea unveiled the Choe Hyon, a 5,000-ton multi-purpose destroyer, in an effort to boost its naval power. The North claims that the destroyer is equipped with hypersonic strategic missiles and strategic ballistic missiles. Kim also ordered the construction of a third destroyer of the same class in time for the ruling Workers' Party of Korea's birthday this year.
