Описание: “The Luncheon” by W. Somerset Maugham is a delightful short story that humorously exposes the false motives of middle-class eating habits.

In the story, the protagonist, a young and impoverished writer living in Paris, receives a letter from a lady who admires his work. Flattered, he agrees to meet her for lunch at the upscale restaurant Foyot. However, he has only eight francs to pay the bill.

When they meet, the lady surprises him. She is forty years old and gives the impression of having more teeth than necessary. Despite the author’s limited budget, she insists on dining at the expensive restaurant, where only the wealthy can afford to eat. She indulges in rich foods and beverages, all while chastising the author for his modest order of mutton.

The story is divided into three parts:

Part I (Present): The narrator and the lady reunite after twenty years.
Part II (20 years later): The author recalls the luncheon from their previous meeting.
Part III (Present): The lady, who once ate light lunches, now weighs nearly 295 pounds.
