What are presets? Presets are a saved edit that can be applied to other images. They are an amazing way to give your photos an incredible look with one click! However, there is a way truth about presets which sometimes gets overlooked.

What is that truth? Presets are a great way to give your photo a style, a look, a specific mood, but should not be used as a FULL edit. They should be used as a place to START your edit.

That’s where people get a little twisted – When I first started, I would use presets as a full edit and it was awesome. However, I found myself relying on the presets rather than learning how to edit and use Lightroom and its tools. After realizing this, I would find presets which style that I liked. I would look at how it was edited and try and duplicate it to learn how to create that look without the preset.

This allowed me to learn how the tools in Lightroom worked and what I needed to do to create certain styles. By doing this over and over I was able to learn Adobe Lightroom better and better until I stopped using presets and created my own edits and thus, my own presets!

Once you have created your own presets in Lightroom, the rule still applies, use them as a STARTER not a full edit. You can use other presets to get ideas and see how different edits are applied but still only as a starter.

Presets are a great tool to edit in Lightroom but make sure you use the correctly. By learning Lightroom and how to edit you will greatly increase your ability and you will be much happier in the long run!
