★ Sea Life London Aquarium ★

Описание: One of the largest aquaria in Europe, containing over 1 million litres of water. Learn about all the world's oceans, as well as rainforest, tropical freshwater, seashores and beaches. See a recreation of a coral reef. Details of the daily expert talks can be found on the video screens in the foyer. The aquarium also operates a conservation and breeding programme run by a team of specialist biologists. A visit to the three levels of the complex in County Hall takes approximately one and a half hours.

Sea Life London Aquarium is well placed close to all the attractions of South Bank, directly next to the London Eye and a 20 minute walk along the River Thames from the Tate Modern.

We know more about the surface of the moon than we do about the underwater world covering two-thirds of our planet. With over 50 living displays and a host of underwater life, the London Aquarium is a journey into this great unknown.

Witness everything from the beautiful riches of the coral reefs and the Indian Ocean to the dark depths of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. On your trip you will see over 350 different species including eels, sharks, piranhas, rays, jellyfish, clownfish, tangs and many more.

In April 2008, the aquarium was purchased by the world's second-largest attractions operator, Merlin Entertainments for an undisclosed sum. The facility was closed for major refurbishments at a cost of £5 million, which were completed in April 2009. Among the additions included a new underwater tunnel, Shark Walk, revamped Pacific Ocean tank and a complete rerouting of the exhibit, all of which were carried out under the supervision of architects Kay Elliott.

The attraction officially became a Sea Life Centre when it reopened in April 2009.

In 2005, the aquarium displayed three robotic fish created by the computer science department at the University of Essex. The fish were designed to be autonomous, swimming around and avoiding obstacles like real fish. Their creator claimed that he was trying to combine "the speed of tuna, acceleration of a pike, and the navigating skills of an eel."

In May 2011, the aquarium opened a new penguin exhibit, with 8 gentoo penguins that were transferred from the Edinburgh Zoo.

London Zoo (the worlds oldest zoo) houses the worlds first ever aquarium and contains a large penguin section, penguin beach and slides for penguin lovers.

Other rainforests in London are at Royal Botanic Kew Gardens (a world heritage site and the worlds largest collection of living plants), and a living rainforest is at the London Zoo, Regents Park, North London.

Sea Life London Aquarium, County Hall, South Bank, is involved in several breeding programs including the Cuban crocodile, seahorses, butterfly goodeids, and jellyfish, and works with many conservation organizations including Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, Save Our Seas, Shark Trust, Rainforest Concern, Earth Sea Sky, and South Pacific Projects.
