He opens the recital with an irresistibly catchy bandish in madhyalay Teental, delineating the romance of this raga with precise focus on lower Ni (7th) as the ending point of his tonal sentences. He cleverly constructs the middle octave blending shudh Ma (pure 4th) and teevra Ma (sharp 4th) with phrases conjoined in the upper octave in the ascent and descent respectively.

Pandit Bharat Bhushan Goswami (sarangi) and Ajay Joglekar (harmonium) play beautifully, supporting Pandit Torvi’s earnest and passionate vocals. Kousic Sen cruises through the composition, supporting the recital ably.

Though its name suggests that this is the pure (shuddh) version of Sarang and is the oldest of this group of ragas, its history reveals that till early 20th century this raga did not enjoy a clear understanding and various musicians treated it differently. The most popular variety of the present era is discussed here. Shudh Sarang is derived from Kalyan that. Its jati is audav-shadav, that is, it uses five notes in the ascent and six notes in its descent. The vadi swar is Re (2nd) and the samvadi swar is Pa or (5th). Shudh Sarang omits gandhar completely and deploys both Shudh and teevra Ma. Rest of the swars are all shuddh or pure. Its arohana and avarohana are as follows:

Usually, ragas belonging to Saarang group are assigned to Kafi thaat but Shuddh Sarang, due to all its shuddh swars in company with teevra Ma (m) is, very logically, assigned to Kalyan thaat. Some musicians employ komal Ni (n), some omit Shuddh Dha (D) while some take the liberty of deploying both the Ma’s chromatically, one after the other. This raga’s uncomplicated and easy-going persona exudes peace.
