What are the true origins of the seven-day week cycle that we have today? It is not an obvious astronomical event like day, month and year are. And contrary to common belief, seven-day week did not come from the Jews - even older civilizations had it.
It was a mathematician Laplace who was deeply convinced that the seven-day week is: the most ancient monument of astronomical knowledge. He was a brilliant mathematician but he could not solve the riddle.
So, how it came that people through the history used the seven-day cycle? Modern science has given us only a partial answer to that question by pointing to most likely sources of day names among different civilizations through the history, but that is not an answer to the crucial question - why seven days! We know from the modern, as well as from the ancient history that there were tries of using 5, 6 or 10 days week cycles, but that did not work. All of them eventually settled back to seven day week at the end.
