Supreme Court judge strength increased to 37 | President Droupadi Murmu approves ordinance

Описание: In a major move aimed at strengthening India’s judicial system, President Droupadi Murmu has promulgated the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Ordinance, 2026, increasing the sanctioned strength of judges in the Supreme Court of India from 33 to 37, excluding the Chief Justice of India.

The decision has been taken to address the growing backlog of pending cases and improve the speed of justice delivery in the country’s apex court. Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the development through a post on X.

According to the government, the amendment further modifies the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956. The move follows recent approval by the Union Cabinet chaired by Narendra Modi to increase the number of Supreme Court judges by four.

Officials stated that rising litigation and increasing workload in the apex court made the expansion necessary. The enhanced judicial strength is expected to help reduce delays in hearings and speed up the disposal of important cases.

The sanctioned strength of Supreme Court judges was last increased in 2019. With the latest amendment, the total strength of the apex court will rise to 38, including the Chief Justice of India.
