Quilted Sneaker Workshop Prep

Описание: This video walks you through a few things you'll want to do to prepare for my Quilted Sneaker Workshop. I'll be offering this along with a lecture to groups as requested.

Pattern:
Depending on where you purchase your kit, you may need to first print out and tape your pattern, in your size.

Cut out the pattern of your choice. The Tandy Leather kits, basically include the 3 in 1 classic pattern, but there are more options on the SneakerKit website. Making sure to connect the back pattern pieces. You may want to trace the pattern onto a more stable surface, such as card stock or poster board.

Use a punch tool to punch the stitch holes along the bottom on the pattern, size 2.0 mm. You can use a multi-punch tool, or leather punches (size 2 and size 4mm). You can also do this with your leather scratch awl.

If your version of the pattern does not include hole markings for the sole (bottom of the pattern), download the pattern in your size from SneakerKit and use it as a template for where to add the holes to your pattern.

Punch the lace holes along the top on the pattern, 4.0 or 4.5 mm.

Fabric:
You will likely not need the entire 1/2 yard, but we are including extra, just for security. If you make more, shoes in the future, 1/4 yard should be plenty.

Quilting: If you decide to piece fabric together for your outsole design, keep in mind the scale and choose smaller quilt block patterns (6 in blocks or smaller).

Quilt your fabric - use smaller piecing…. When choosing your fabric, use interesting contrasts… select different prints for different parts of the shoe…. Consider opportunities for fussy cutting. Think about the fabric choice for your binding

Wholecloth quilting works great and this is an opportunity to use those striking and colorful quilting cotton prints.

Consider other fabrics choices like denim, lightweight canvas, and of course leathers and vinyls. And mixing of more than one type of material.

How might you incorporate embroidery??

How will you want to treat your raw edges? We will use binding, but also think about using leather strips, serging, etc.

The backside of your quilting can be your lining, but you can also add lining fabric and piece the two sections, right side together (adding 1/4” seam allowance), then turn right side out.

Use some of your scraps! If you’ve ever made a quilted garment, you definitely have scraps leftover that would be the perfect size for shoes.
