Monoculus

There are wooded areas across the UK that locals avoid once the light fades. Not because of superstition — but because people have gone missing there, and the ones who return are never the same.
Behind the official reports, the police tape, the search parties… there’s a name villagers mutter quietly:
Monoculus.
It isn’t a ghost story told for effect. It’s spoken with the same tone as “mind yourself by the railway” or “don’t walk home drunk near the canal”. It’s a warning.
Monoculus is described as a thin, sickly, human-shaped creature pale as damp wood, with limbs too long and too light for its frame. Its skin has that swollen, soft look of something that’s lived in the dark far too long. And in the centre of its skull sits one large, unblinking eye, slightly bloodshot, always wet, always watching.
It lives inside hollow trees.
People who’ve camped in affected woodland report hearing something moving through the trunks at night — the crackle of rotten bark shifting, and a slow dragging sound, like something squeezing through damp, narrow space. At first, you assume it’s an animal. But animals don’t tap.
And Monoculus taps.
Not loudly. Not aggressively.
Just enough to draw attention.
Tap…
……tap-tap
……………tap.
Always above head height.
Those who’ve heard it describe the sound as deliberate, almost testing, like knuckles gently rapping for a response.
The sightings have a pattern: the victim notices subtle things first.
• The woods go completely, unnervingly silent
• They realise the path they’re on isn’t the one they came in on
• They become certain they’re being watched — but by something above, not around
It doesn’t rush its victims. It follows them, shifting from tree to tree, letting disorientation set in. People lose their bearings, start talking to themselves, sometimes remove clothing because they suddenly “feel too hot”, even on freezing nights. Search teams have found coats and shoes neatly placed in the undergrowth, as if the owner calmly removed them before wandering off.
When Monoculus finally comes down from the trees, it does so quietly — no dramatic attack, no roar, nothing cinematic. It gets close enough that the victim feels breath on the back of their head, and if they turn and meet that single eye, they freeze. Not magically — but from pure, overwhelming terror. A shock response so severe the body simply shuts down.
Victims that survive are found days later, dehydrated, scratched to bits, often with small circular bruising at the top of the scalp — like something pressed down firmly there. They rarely speak at first. Hospitals report confusion, memory gaps, and severe panic responses to trees, tapping noises, or even the colour of moss.
