My mother's E39 530i had a small hatch to access the trunk; sadly, my 540i does not. It was an option that the car did not have. Luckily, it's an easy fix that can be done in an afternoon for cheap. This won't come close to the folding seat option, but it will help with taking home things like a couple 2x4s or anything else long. Though you won't be able to see the results often; it's still a good idea to make them look nice.
I used a rubber edging to clean up the hole after cutting it carefully with a saw. With a brace for the seat cushion, you can't tell from the interior that anything has changed. From the trunk, the modified liner is also barely noticeable. Some people use this to make subwoofer enclosures as well. This will work for any E39 BMW unless you're lucky enough to have a touring.
