The day after The Firearm Blog ran a quick article by Richard Johnson on our YouTube channel, Aimed Research was conducting a test to get better images of tumbling projectiles in the same gel that Bruce from Pocket Guns And Gear was noting tumbling: Clear Ballistics Gel. A reader, "Bryan S," commented at the bottom of the article, "What was that flash in the center of the gel in the Cutting Edge video? It was right as the gel collapsed to it furthest point." Another reader "lucusloc," advanced the theory of Sonoluminescence. (Clear Ballistics gel was used for the range test for Cutting Edge Bullets.)
During the tests, increasing the camera frame rate, we captured better video of the flash. About 20 seconds into the video there is a faint flash on the far right of the collapsing cavity. It continues to collapse until three pockets remain. The middle cavity flashes at about 0:22, and the right cavity at 0:23. The cavity on the left ceases to collapse and appears to fill with gases from the middle cavity, then the three cavities expand. The right cavity flashes at about 0:46. The cavities have been noted to continue to collapse, flash, and expand over and over again in longer video clips. The video was recorded at 28,211 frames per second with a 3 microsecond shutter speed at 1280x176 resolution. Note that initially the flash is a light blue color reminiscent of an electrical discharge and the following long duration burn is yellowish-orange reminiscent of a low temperature deflagration.
