A short video and stills of the aircraft leaving Lee-on-Solent to fly to the Normandy beaches on the 4th June 2014. The weather was very poor which delayed the flight by a few hours, but the sight (and sound) was worth waiting for and gave a slight indication what it would have been like standing there 70 years ago.
The name Dakota was an acronym made from the letters DACoTA which stood for Douglas Aircraft Company - Transport Aircraft. Over 16,000 aircraft of this design, were built.
