In June 2025 I and some Alaska friends, Gus and Ayla, climbed the Disappointment Cleaver route on Rainier.
I stayed two nights at Camp Muir to acclimatize. Gus and Ayla on the other hand climbed Rainier car to car! They headed from paradise directly up to Camp Muir, met me at midnight and after a quick snack we set out at 1 am for the summit.
Climbing Mount Rainier via Disappointment Cleaver: The "Easiest" Route? 🏔️
Thinking about standing on top of the most glaciated peak in the lower 48? Join us as we take on Mount Rainier via the Disappointment Cleaver (DC) route, widely considered the most straightforward path to the summit—but "easy" is a relative term at 14,411 feet!
In this video, we document the full experience of a Rainier summit push:
The Trek to Camp Muir: Starting the journey from Paradise and navigating the snowfields [00:00].
Life at Base Camp: Setting up the "Hines Hacienda" at Camp Muir and dealing with the high-altitude conditions [01:43].
The Summit Push: Leaving camp in the early morning hours and hitting the 13,100 ft mark as the sun rises [04:02].
The Summit: Panoramic views from the top, including sightings of Mt. Adams and Mt. Jefferson [04:58].
Whether you are planning your first Rainier climb or just want to see the incredible cloud inversion from the roof of Washington, this video gives you a raw look at what to expect on the DC route.
