Описание: This was a neat display setup by Caterpillar for their 100th anniversary. This was the 497th Heavy shop company display demonstrating a company of engineers comprised of all Caterpillar employees. This was an awesome display with a very interesting history. The 497th Engineer Heavy Shop Company was a unique U.S. Army unit during World War II, composed almost entirely of Caterpillar Tractor Co. employees, specifically formed to maintain heavy machinery used in the construction of the vital Ledo Road in the China-Burma-India Theater. Formation and Training: The company was activated on October 1, 1942, in Peoria, and underwent basic training at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana. They were a highly proficient group, even being rated the best drill company in their battalion during training.
Mission: The 497th was deployed to the China-Burma-India Theater with the mission of constructing and maintaining the Ledo Road, a critical supply line built to bypass the Japanese-controlled portion of the Burma Road. The task was described as one of the "toughest job ever given to the U.S. Army Engineers in wartime".
"Little Peoria": The unit established a makeshift repair shop and living area at mile marker 103 on the Ledo Road, which they dubbed "Little Peoria". This location became the central hub for performing heavy maintenance on the numerous tractors and other equipment working on the road.
Equipment: The unit worked on a variety of military-spec equipment, including Caterpillar D4 and D7 tractors and Adams graders, performing crucial repairs and keeping the supply line open.
The 497th Engineer Heavy Shop Company was a prime example of a specialized, industry-specific military unit that leveraged civilian expertise for the war effort, highlighting the vital role of heavy machinery maintenance in large-scale military engineering projects.
