2012 was a tragic year for the Decorah Eagles and Raptor Resource Project with the loss of D12 on the morning of July 1, 2012. D12 was found at the base of a power pole perishing from electrocution. The Male and Female adult eagles in Decorah have had 100% success in raising their eaglets to fledge, and this year was no exception. The hazards these raptors face once they leave the nest is now the focus of this season....

2012 was filled with joyous moments also.... The antics of the 3 eaglets were well documented, and they reveled in playful behavior. Whether in the rain, sun, or in the dark of night, observing the eaglets provided fun as well as an education in behavior, showing us all that no 2 eaglets are exactly alike. We even had a laugh watching D14 break the camera mount on the Cottonwood Tree! In the end, Mom and Dad did a wonderful job rearing 3 healthy eaglets, that for all intent, were ready to take on the world. In this case, the world struck back.......

I was in Decorah when D12 perished, a moment I will never forget, nor would want to. The title "Homecoming" is more about me and my trip, and my permanent connection to this eagle family, and all wildlife. I could never explain to anyone the deep place this family occupies inside my heart. For that, I will be forever grateful to Raptor Resource Project.
