The Alpini are the oldest active mountain infantry in the world! Considering Italy's mountainous borders with threats throughout its long history, one can well imagine why. During WWII they were primarily deployed along the Eastern front and in the Balkans, where they'd put their hard-won skills and elite training to the test.

BASE:
A thick layer of PVA followed by sand - I've used WWS 'Army Coarse' with nice big chunks of stone in it. Paint with Vallejo Brown Sand, wash with Army Painter Soft Tone, then drybrush with Vallejo Dark Sand. Tiny dots of PVA under larger rocks, then sprinkle static grass for patchy greenery. Done!
