Exploring an Abandoned Rockies Ghost Town! (Gilman, CO)

Описание: In this week's Free4All Adventure we're in Gilman, Colorado exploring the Abandoned Ghost Town and the Mines left untouched underneath it. This was quite the adventure with a tone of hiking and some dangerous climbing and mine exploring.

Gilman, Colorado was a small mining town perched high above the Eagle River, built around the extraction of zinc, lead, and silver and sustained for decades by the nearby Eagle Mine. Founded in the late 1800s and later owned by New Jersey Zinc Co. was a classic company town with homes, a school, a hospital, and a tight-knit community, but its fortunes were inseparable from the mine itself. By the 1970s and 1980s, decades of mining had severely contaminated the surrounding land and waterways with heavy metals, leading the Environmental Protection Agency to designate the area a Superfund site. In 1986, facing mounting environmental cleanup costs and declining mine profitability, the company shut down operations, and residents were forced to leave almost overnight, leaving Gilman abandoned—a quiet, rusting reminder of the environmental and economic costs of America’s mining past.
