In this experiment, we learn about afterimages and why we see them.
Our eyes contain specialised cells called cones and rods. Rods help us see in low light, but they can’t see colour and have difficulty seeing fine details. There are three types of cones, corresponding to red, green, and blue light wavelengths, which allow us to see colour. When we stare at something for a while, that can tire our cone cells. While those cells are recovering, they’re not contributing to our regular vision as much, which results in us seeing an afterimage.
Try this experiment out in the video! You can even try it with one eye closed and then switch between your eyes when looking at the white screen.
