‘Svartsengi’ tells the story of letting go of what isn’t yet lost.

The song takes its name from the volcanic area in the southwest of Iceland, near the fishing village of Grindavík. In 2022, the village — home to close friends of songwriter Tom — was evacuated following ongoing volcanic threats. Their house still stands, yet remains completely inaccessible.
The lofi piano tape loop at the heart of the piece symbolizes the memory left behind — something that seems to have vanished, yet becomes tangible again through sound. Misty, ethereal vocals and the melancholic trumpet of Norwegian musician Arve Henriksen give voice to this story of loss, stillness, and hope.

The artwork features a photograph by Hans Vera, ex-resident of Grindavík (...until 2022).
