Forensic Animation: Van Hits Bicyclist

Описание: A father and son were riding their bicycles on a sidewalk. A van was stopped at the exit from an apartment complex.

The stop sign was mounted too low and too far from the road. The hedges were planted too close to the sidewalk and had been allowed to grow too tall. The sidewalk had a dip in it as it passed the hedges. These combined to obscure the driver's view of the son..After the father passed, she pulled out and struck the boy.

Investigating officers photographed the scene. The hedges were trimmed the next morning. No measurements were taken. The City tore made the sidewalk level to eliminate the dip.

We were provided with the officer's photographs, an expert's survey of the wall and sidewalk before it was reconfigured, an aerial photograph taken the week after the accident, and detailed measurements of the current scene. We utilized to create an accurate computer model of the scene. Experts used this model to demonstrate the visibility of the driver at the time of the accident and the visibility that would have been available with a properly designed and maintained exit from the complex.
