Lt Col Baxter studied medicine at the University of Manchester and completed a PhD in traumatic brain injury at University College London.  He is a military neurosurgeon, having served in Afghanistan, Germany and Cyprus.

After training as a specialist registrar on the South Thames rotation, Lt Col Baxter completed a Cranio-Spinal Trauma Fellowship at St George’s Hospital Trust, followed by a Complex Spine and Deformity Fellowship at RNOH.  He also completed the EANS Brachial Plexus and Peripheral Nerve Fellowship in Gunzburg, Germany.  He was appointed as a Consultant at RNOH in January 2020, with an Honorary Consultant role at St George’s Hospital Trust.

Lt Col Baxter’s work as a neurosurgeon in Stanmore includes neurosurgery, assessment and management of patients with primary and metastatic cancers of the spine, neuromodulation and spinal cord injury. He also runs a clinic at the Defence National Rehabilitation Centre (DNRC), Stanford Hall where he specialises in the non-surgical management of back pain and sciatica and enhanced recovery, enabling soldiers who need spinal surgery to get back to peak fitness.  His ongoing research interests include optimising function and performance following spinal cord injury, clinician and patient priorities in primary tumours of the spine, and traumatic brain injury.

Lt Col Baxter recently became a Fellow of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine and is Medical Officer for the Army Rugby League Team as well as the England Wheelchair Rugby League team.
