Is the era of the "Rifleman" over? ☠️
For the last 100 years, the infantry squad has been built around the rifle. But the war in Ukraine has taught us a brutal lesson: You cannot shoot a man in a deep trench with a 5.56mm carbine. The enemy has a vote, and in modern Large Scale Combat Operations (LSCO), the enemy is in defilade, behind concrete, or watching you from a drone.
The US Army’s answer is not a better rifle. It is the Precision Grenadier System (PGS).
Currently, PEO Soldier has three active solicitations for this system. This isn't science fiction; it is an urgent capability gap. The Army is looking to field a semi-automatic, magazine-fed, 30mm airburst cannon that will turn cover into concealment.
In this video, we break down the hardware, the ballistics, and the history behind this shift:
The Hardware: What is the PGS? (30mm High Explosive Airburst, Counter-UAS, and AP capabilities).
The History: Why the XM25 "Punisher" actually worked in Afghanistan (and why it was canceled).
The Reality: How Ukrainian infantry are already using Mk19s as "Pocket Artillery" because rifles are failing in the trenches.
BUT... How do you clear a room with a grenade launcher? The introduction of the PGS requires a complete rewrite of Squad Doctrine. We believe the future US Army Squad will look less like a modern fire team and more like a WWII "Stormtrooper" unit.
