STORYLINE
A rare Chinese porcelain bowl was sold for more than 26 (m) million US dollars in Hong Kong on Wednesday.
Auction house Sotheby's set an auction record for Song Ceramics when it sold the Ruyao Washer for 26.65 (m) million US dollars, including buyer's premium.
The 900-year-old flower-shaped bowl was produced in a Ruyao kiln during the Northern Song dynasty.
"There's only five pieces from that particular kiln in private hands. And to them, this is the finest one. The last time Sotheby's offered the piece of Ruyao was thirty years ago already. So, collectors all around the world have been waiting for this opportunity for long time," said Nicolas Chow, Sotheby's International Head of Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art.
Hong Kong has become one of the biggest auction centres besides New York and London due to the booming Chinese economy.
"The dramatic entrance of mainland Chinese buyers in the market place since the late 90s that has really given a great boost to our market," Chow said.
"There's big demand from mainland China and the dwindling, dwindling supply of great material," he added.
The rare bowl, previously owned by a Japanese private collector, was sold to an anonymous phone bidder.
