This is what Paul has to say about Irving:
"Irving is a proud, quirky Jewish New Yorker with a sense of humor and a desire to have “some pleasure.” He has lost the love of his life, his wife Rosie, to cancer, but is open to meeting a woman to spend time with. One of the challenges for me in bringing Irving to life is giving him the proper attitude and tone of voice as it relates to each emotional twist and turn of this play, and they come quickly. Irving will laugh to himself as he cracks a joke about sex (or lack thereof), and moments later, he’s wistful recalling Rosie. He gets upset with Peg for not taking his religious beliefs seriously, but he also shows great compassion and vulnerability. Fortunately, I get to use the same New York accent I used in my last play (Vinnie in The Odd Couple); Irving is an older, more independent version of Vinnie.
I like that this play, despite the characters being two older people, has something for everybody. So many of us have tried to navigate expectations, quirks, prejudices, needs, wants, and personalities when starting a new relationship. The script captures the real-life angst and comedy inherent in the situation Peg and Irving find themselves in, that many of us have found ourselves in, regardless of age.
The characters could have easy come off as stereotypes, with the obvious dramatic and comedic episodes that would follow. But the audience gets to know Peg and Irving as real people, which makes it easy to empathize with them over their losses, cringe with them through their awkwardness, and cheer them on toward companionship and happiness."
